Probably nowadays construction quality (in terms of what the construction workers do) has also diminished. But those are two separate things.

If we follow Marx's Labor Theory of Value it does. Thus, if we follow such theory the rate of exploitation does seem to be very high for workers producing properties, as OP brings up, it seems.

But, we also need to keep in mind that a lot of these workers are 'illegal' residents working below the minimum wage threshold.

USA is capitalist though. It makes sense that entry level manual labor pays less than being a lawyer which has a higher barrier of entry. Also construction workers don't design the buildings, architects, drafters and project managers still get paid well.
