Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was behind the podium on Thursday where he announced plans to bring the Women’s Health Protection Act to the floor.
The act would protect abortion rights at the federal level.
“Next week’s vote will be one of the important we take not only this session but this century,” Schumer said.
Other senators spoke as well about this move in this direction.
“The American people will see where their senator stands, should women have the same rights they’ve had for 50 years” U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin said.
The remarks come after a leaked draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade.
“They misled us, they led us to believe this was settled law,” U.S. Senator Dick Durbin said.
Justice Samuel Alito, the author of the opinion draft, cancelled an appearance at a judicial conference on Thursday.
This comes as fencing was put up overnight around the court as an additional security measure.
An investigation is now underway after Chief Justice John Roberts directed the marshal of the court to lead the probe into the leak to find out who did it and why?
It’s still unclear if a crime has even been committed.
“The document is not a final decision of the court and i don’t want to talk about the deliberate process of the court but what I will say is that the justice department has steadfastly been committed to defending the right to abortion,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said.
As the investigation continues, the vote to defend abortion rights is set to take place on Wednesday.

The draft opinion calls into question the fundamental right to privacy — the right to make personal choices about marriage, whether to have children, and how to raise them.
These are fundamental rights for Americans — a critical part of who we are.
