A Houston police officer was hospitalized Thursday after he was attacked by dog in east Houston, according to the police department.
According to HPD’s Lt. Larry Crowson, officers were called to the scene in the 400 block of Owens Street around 2:15 p.m. after a woman in the area was reportedly bit by the dog.
While the responding officer began taking the report, he was also attacked by the canine, police said. The injured officer was taken to the hospital and is in a stable condition.
Animal Control officials were called to the scene and attempted to subdue the dog. Officers said they attempted to help Animal Control workers but the dog continued to charge at officers. That’s when an HPD officer reportedly opened fire and killed the dog.
It is unclear where the dog’s owner was at the time of the attack.
