The Houston Astros have placed star second baseman Jose Altuve on the 10-day injured list, backdated to April 19.
Altuve strained his left hamstring in the eighth inning of Monday’s Astros home opener while running down the first-base line.
So far this season, in nine games, Altuve is batting .167 with a home run and three RBI. The 2017 MVP is a 7-time All-Star, including last season, and has had four seasons with at least 200 hits, each season of which he led the American League in that category.
To take his spot on the roster, Houston promoted infielder J.J. Matijevic from Triple-A Sugar Land. In 11 games with the Space Cowboys, Matijevic is hitting .310 with four home runs and 10 RBI.
To create room on the team’s 40-man roster, the Astros transferred infielder Taylor Jones to the 60-day disabled list.
