Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced toll relief for thousands of commuters on Thursday.
During a news conference in Orlando, DeSantis said that drivers on Florida’s Turnpike, Sawgrass Expressway and the Alligator Alley will be eligible for a SunPass credit.
The credit will also apply to tolls on the I-95 Express lanes, I-75 Express lanes, I-595 Express lanes and Palmetto Express lanes.
Drivers who have 40 or more toll transactions per month will get a 20-percent credit to their SunPass bill.
Drivers who have 80 or more toll transaction per month will get a 25-percent credit to their SunPass bill.
The relief period begins Sept. 1, and runs until next March, when DeSantis hopes the Florida Legislature will pass laws for permanent toll relief.
Commuters do not need to sign up for these savings. Their account just needs to be in good standing. They will begin seeing the credit on their SunPass bills in October when the September bill comes due.
DeSantis says the toll relief is expected to help 400,000 Florida residents, and bring 40 million dollars in savings.
Highways that fall under the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, like State Road 836, are not part of this deal. DeSantis urged the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority to adopt similar relief actions until the Florida Legislature meets next March.
