It’s August and that means summer break is nearly over for South Florida schoolchildren.
The annual “Back to School” fair in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood Thursday helped kids and families get ready for the new school year.
The event, held at Overtown’s Williams Park, has been going on for 20 years. It offered services like dental cleanings, physicals, haircuts, manicures and backpacks filled with school supplies.
“We know that especially now during times of, you know, heavy inflation, our families need to support our kids,” Tina Brown, the CEO of the Overtown Youth Center, said. “We want to make sure we give them the tools necessary to go back to school.”
Angels for Humanity, the Caleb and Calder Sloan’s Awesome Foundation, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning’s charities, the Overtown Youth Center and Honey Shine all took part in this back-to-school health and wellness fair for the children in the Overtown community.
“So today I’m also doing physicals and just helping give back to the community, filling out their physical forms for their back to school,” Dr. Tatiana Arteaga-Teo, a local physician, said.
Local 10 News Anchor Calvin Hughes was also at the event.
The children said they are grateful for the opportunity to return to school extra prepared.
“They have a whole bunch of activities here so the kids can have their last little bit of fun before the summer is over,” student Natasha Suarez said.
