Alief Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a starting salary of $60,000, a $2,000 supplement for returning employees and a $500 step increase for teacher paygrade positions during Monday’s board meeting.
This supplement is equivalent to a 3% raise of the midpoint for most employees and higher than 3% for others, according to a release.
The supplement will be paid on the Sept. 30 paycheck.
“The Board and I are aware that there has never been a more challenging time for public educators in our nation’s history since the shutdown due to the pandemic in March 2020. We also realize that with the rising inflation/gas prices that we needed to assist our employees by providing additional compensation,” said HD Chambers, Superintendent of Schools. “Our Trustees realize that competitive and meaningful compensation plans are important in attracting and retaining the very best staff members possible.”
“The Board and I take great pride in knowing that Alief ISD’s teacher salaries are among the highest in the Houston area, no matter what level of experience. Our healthcare benefits package remains the highest quality and least expensive in the greater Houston area, even with the minimal increase in health care premiums planned for January 2023. When you combine being among the highest paid with the lowest health insurance premiums, Alief ISD staff will still bring home more “take-home-pay” than those in surrounding districts,” Chambers added.
