An investigation is underway after a premature fetus was found in southeast Houston Friday, police said.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a premature fetus found by a neighbor in the 1200 block of El Camino Village Drive around 1:56 a.m.
Police said a woman reported that she went out to her car to grab something when she found the fetus in a blanket. The woman is a nurse and attempted to help the premature fetus before the arrival of emergency officials with the Houston Fire Department, investigators said.
The fetus was transported by ambulance and pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.
Police are investigating to determine who left the baby there and why.
