In the aftermath of a plane’s fiery landing, aviation authorities were asking Miami International Airport fliers Wednesday to double-check their itineraries with their airlines.
The airport had two out of four runways closed, as the National Transportation Safety Board conducted an investigation into the RED Air M-82 jetliner’s landing on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, about 79% of arriving flights and about 75% of departures were on schedule despite the lack of operational capacity.
Federal investigators reported the plane’s left main landing gear collapsed. According to RED Air, seven of the 140 on board, including 130 passengers and 10 crew members, were injured. There was a pregnant woman among the victims.
The passengers, who were arriving from the Dominican Republic, evacuated as dark smoke billowed. Paola Garcia said she knew something was wrong when the plane began to move from side to side. She said she then saw windows crack and a wing on fire.
“I feel alive again. I thought I was going to die,” Garcia said.
