An investigation is underway after one person was found dead inside what appeared to be a vacant home while firefighters were working to put out a blaze in The Heights Tuesday, officials said.

The Houston Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire in the 1100 block of W. 19th Street around 12:45 a.m.

According to officials, there was a chain-link fence around the home. Firefighters said the residence appeared to not have any power and there were security bars on the windows. After firefighters forced entry into the home, they said they found a dead body.

Officials said they continued to extinguish the flames after making the discovery.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation.
