A 48-year-old man appeared in Broward County court on Monday to face a murder charge after officers found a 69-year-old woman dead in his apartment at the Viewpointe gated community in Margate.

Deputies booked Evan Rosenthal into the Broward County main jail on Sunday and they were holding him without bond on Monday afternoon. He appeared to have suffered an injury to his forehead.

“Rosenthal murdered the victim inside the residence,” Margate Lt. Al Banatte wrote.

Evan Rosenthal is being held without bond at the Broward County main jail.
Detective Michael Berryman identified the victim as Laurie Belleshein and reported she died about 7 p.m., on Saturday, at 5510 Lakeside Dr., in apartment 205, according to Banatte. Records show Belleshein lived in Pompano Beach and New York.

Rosenthal, who was born in Arizona, has co-owned the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in Margate since 1995, Broward County property records show.

Rosenthal is a father who got divorced in 2015, Broward court records show. Before his divorce, a Facebook account shows he performed with a local rock band known as Project X at different bars and clubs in Broward County.

Rosenthal didn’t have a criminal record in Broward or Miami-Dade counties, court records show. His attorney asked Broward Circuit Judge Phoebe Francois on Monday to order a mental health evaluation. Broward Circuit Judge Michael Lynch was assigned the murder case

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the murder to call Berryman at 954-972-7111.
