A fuel truck overturned on Florida’s Turnpike Monday afternoon in northern Broward County, leading state troopers to close the highway’s southbound lanes, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers diverted southbound Turnpike traffic onto Glades Road as they investigated.

According to FHP, the crash happened at the 72 mile marker, just south of the Broward-Palm Beach county line. According to troopers, the truck had a rear tire blowout, which caused the driver to lose control, flipping the truck over several times in the grass on the right shoulder.

Medics took the driver to Broward Health North with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials believe the medium-sized truck contained 800-1000 gallons of fuel and declared the scene a hazmat incident. They have not yet said when the southbound Turnpike lanes will reopen.
