A major shakeup is coming to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board following Tuesday’s election.
It was a big win for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, as two of the candidates he endorsed emerged victorious.
They are District 4 winner Roberto Alonso and District 8 winner Monica Colucci.
In a campaign video, Colucci touted her 26 years as a teacher, most recently at Everglades K-8 Center in Weschester.
As with any politician, given her victory, Local 10 News wanted to get her reaction.
At her southwest Miami-Dade home, Colucci’s husband told Local 10′s Hatzel Vela that she wasn’t available.
When the camera got closer, he stops talking. It seemed like the newly elected public servant wasn’t ready to speak.
Her husband closed the garage door and went inside.
By text, Colucci’s campaign guy David Custin chastised Local 10 for going to her house, saying, “We don’t march to the beat of your drum.”
Colucci beat incumbent school board member Marta Perez.
The longtime public servant spoke to Local 10 News about her loss.
“I leave on the highest note: A-rated school district,” Perez said.
The republican who labels herself as a moderate conservative, described the political campaign against her.
“It was hell,” Perez said. “The degree of intimidation and nastiness and lies, outright lies.”
She showed Local 10 News just some of the flyers, of which she said, “All of it is inaccurate and stupid.”
Perez said the experience she just went through reminds her of Cuba.
“It’s extremism at its peak,” she said. “If you have a different thought or opinion, you are ostracized and you better be in lock step with what comandante wants.”
In this case, Perez says the comandante is a fellow republican, Lieutenant Gov. Jeanette Nunez.
Nunez’s political action committee is behind a website solely dedicated to attacking Perez.
As for the future, Perez believes her election defeat will make other school board members nervous.
“I think some board members will say I better behave or I’ll get the same treatment,” she said.
The new school board members will be installed on Nov. 22.
